In-the-ear (ITE) hearing aids
- Switch to your hearing aid’s ‘T’ setting, if it has one. If not, use it on the standard setting.
- Hold your phone up to your ear and move it around until you get the best volume.
- Avoid holding your phone flat against your ear as this might cause a whistling noise.
- Use your phone’s volume control or speech amplifier as normal.
Behind-the-ear (BTE) hearing aids
- Switch to your hearing aid’s ‘T’ setting, if it has one. If not, use it on the standard setting.
- Hold your phone against the back of your ear, close to your hearing aid.
- Move the phone around until you get the best volume.
- If you hear a whistling, move your phone further away from your hearing aid.
- Adjust your hearing aid volume, if needed.
- Use your phone’s volume control or speech amplifier as normal.
If you find that your hearing aid is picking up interference on calls, you can use a neck loop. This will keep your phone away from the hearing aid and reduce interference. Or you can use the loudspeaker setting on your phone.
Using a phone with an inductive coupler
Some phones – e.g. hearing aid compatible phones and all BT payphones – contain an inductive coupler.
When using a phone like this, follow the steps above as you would with any phone. But if your hearing aid does not have a ‘T’ setting, you’ll need to check your hearing aid manual for instructions on pairing your hearing aid with an inductive coupler.
