How to spot and handle a scam
The goal of a scammer is to gain access to your sensitive information, such as passwords and bank details. If you think you may be dealing with a scammer, end the conversation and never share any personal information.
Signs of a scam call
- The caller sounds urgent or threatening
- They ask for remote access to your computer
- They ask for personal details, passwords or bank details
What to do
- Hang up
- If they claim to be from BT report the call
- If you have Call Protect, blocklist the number
- If they claim to be from a respected business, look the business's number up and call back
Signs of a scam email
- The email sounds urgent or threatening
- There are spelling or grammar mistakes
- They ask for personal details, passwords or bank details
What to do
- Don't click links, open attachments or reply
- If its seemingly from BT, forward as attachment to phishing@bt.com, if not report@phishing.gov.uk
- Then delete the email
- Even real-looking emails may have been spoofed
Signs of a scam text
- The text sounds urgent or threatening
- There are spelling or grammar mistakes
- They ask for personal details, passwords or bank details
What to do
- Don't click on links, reply or text back
- If you can see the number, check whether it's genuine by searching online
- Forward the text to 7726 so we can help
- Then delete the text
